Career
Dave McKay (born March 1, 1960 in Winnipeg) embodies the transformative coach who guided an athlete to Olympic gold. As an athlete himself, McKay competed at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and began his university career at Simon Fraser University in 1980. A multiple national and collegiate champion, he won five OUA titles and four CIAU titles, contributing to SFU’s first championship-level program.
After retiring from competition, McKay became the architect of major athletes’ success. Certified NCCP level 4 with more than 20 years of high-performance coaching experience, he guided Daniel Igali to gold at the 1999 Senior World Championships and the 2000 Olympics. Associated with the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club, McKay built a remarkable coaching résumé across multiple Olympic Games and World Championships.
Inducted into the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame in 2024 as an athlete, McKay remained involved in coaching with the Canadian Olympic team for Paris 2024. His legacy reflects the transmission of the values of excellence from competitor to mentor.
