Biography

Daniel Igali remains Canada’s only Olympic men’s wrestling champion. Born February 3, 1974 in Nigeria, Igali came to Canada in 1994 to compete at the Commonwealth Games. Facing political instability at home, he obtained refugee status and acquired Canadian citizenship in 1998.

After attending Simon Fraser University (1997–1999), Igali won three consecutive NAIA titles with a remarkable 116-match winning streak in collegiate wrestling. In 1999 he became the first Canadian man to win a World Championship in freestyle wrestling. His peak came at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, where he captured gold at 69 kg freestyle. He reaffirmed his dominance by winning gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games (Manchester, 74 kg).

After retiring in 2004, Igali founded the Daniel Igali Foundation to support education in Nigeria, realising his dream of establishing a school in his native Eniwari in 2006. Inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (2007) and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (2012), Igali embodies a journey of excellence and philanthropy.
