Biography

John McPhedran stands in the annals of Canadian Olympic wrestling as a representative of the pre-modern era of Olympic participation. Born September 17, 1949 and died August 7, 2015, McPhedran represented Canada in Greco-Roman at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 68 kg class.

Before his Olympic appearance, McPhedran built his credentials by winning a bronze medal at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico in Greco-Roman. At Montreal 1976 he served as captain of the Canadian Olympic wrestling team — an honour reflecting the respect of his peers and his standing in the sport.

After his competitive career, McPhedran became a wrestling coach at school and international levels, bringing his expertise to programs in Canada and Thailand. His stops in Edmonton and Smithers reflect his commitment to promoting wrestling in diverse regions of the country, leaving a legacy of mentorship and athletic development.
