Biography

Hannah Taylor illustrates the rapid rise of young Canadian women wrestlers to the Olympic stage. Born in 1998 and originally from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Taylor represented Brock University, where she won back-to-back U SPORTS national titles in 2018 and 2019 at 59 kg. She took the U SPORTS title in 2020 after a move up to 63 kg and was named U SPORTS Rookie of the Year in 2017.

Progressing quickly, Taylor won silver at the 2019 and 2020 Pan American Championships, then bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham) at 57 kg. At the 2023 Pan American Games (Santiago) she won silver at 57 kg. Qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics after winning the Pan American qualifier in Acapulco, Mexico, Taylor became the first Canadian female wrestler to qualify for Paris.

At the Olympics she reached the bronze-medal match at 57 kg but fell 4-0 to Helen Maroulis (USA), finishing just off the podium. Despite the disappointment, Taylor is building a promising long-term career as she approaches her thirties.
