Biography

Haislan Veranes García represents an exceptional story of athletic resilience, among the most experienced Canadian freestyle wrestlers. Born March 4, 1983 in Guanabacoa, Cuba, García immigrated to Canada and received citizenship in 2007, settling in Coquitlam, British Columbia. A Team Impact Wrestling Club athlete, he became one of Canada’s most seasoned wrestlers.

A remarkably persistent competitor, García attended three Olympic Games (2008, 2012, 2016) and seven World Championships (2009–2011, 2013–2015, 2017). He progressively improved his Olympic results: sixteenth at Beijing 2008, seventh at London 2012, continued participation at Rio 2016. He also competed at four Pan American Championships (2008–2011) and the 2015 Pan American Games.

After his competitive career, García joined the technical staff at Arizona State University as a volunteer assistant coach. His legacy reflects endurance and consistency across decades of international competition, embodying values of perseverance and commitment to excellence.
