Biography

Erica Wiebe made Canadian women’s wrestling history as the second Canadian and third Games champion in the sport. Born June 13, 1989 in Stittsville, Ontario, Wiebe discovered the sport through a poster at Sacred Heart High School in ninth grade, initially drawn to the idea of wearing a wrestling singlet and grappling with the boys.

In the 2014 season she set a record by winning every tournament she entered, stringing together 36 consecutive victories. At Rio 2016, Wiebe won gold at 75 kg freestyle, dominating the competition. She doubled up with gold at the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow 2014, Gold Coast 2018). Her honours also include three World Championship podiums and a top world ranking in her weight class.

Trained at Carleton University, Wiebe announced her retirement in 2024 after an exceptional career of more than two decades. She held a role in athlete relations and safe-sport at the Canadian Olympic Committee and has worked as a commentator at World and continental championships.
