Biography
Ana Godinez Gonzalez embodies an extraordinary immigrant journey into Canadian Olympic sport. Born in Mexico, she fled with her family at age seven after a kidnapping threat, crossing the country to take refuge in Vancouver, British Columbia. Settling in South Surrey, she discovered rugby and then turned to freestyle wrestling at 16 to sharpen her tackling technique.
Granted Canadian citizenship in 2019, she became eligible to represent Canada internationally. A four-time medallist at the Pan American Wrestling Championships (three gold, one silver), she has built an impressive continental résumé. Silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham) at 62 kg. Qualifying for Paris 2024, she reached the bronze-medal match but fell 11-0 to Norway’s Grace Bullen.
Godinez Gonzalez’s path transcends wrestling: a symbol of resilience in the face of trauma, of refuge found in Canada, and of athletic excellence. Her sister Karla Godinez also competes as a wrestler, amplifying the family’s imprint on the sport.
