Biography

Amar Dhesi embodies the new generation of Canadian heavyweight wrestlers, blending North American training with Olympic ambition. Born September 2, 1995 in Surrey, British Columbia, Dhesi represents the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club. A three-time NCAA Division I All-American, he studied at Oregon State University where he excelled at heavyweight (125 kg).

Dhesi won silver at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia — later upgraded to gold after the champion was disqualified for doping. His senior career, however, was slowed by three ACL tears in six years, limiting his availability for competition. Despite these setbacks, he qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, finishing thirteenth in 125 kg freestyle. He reasserted himself by placing in the top two at the 2024 Pan American qualifier.

A sociology graduate from Oregon State, Dhesi works as a police officer for the Vancouver Police Department. His story reflects resilience in the face of adversity and the ability to overcome serious injury to remain a top-level athlete.
